Rainbow Trout
Scientific Name:Oncorhynchus mykiss
Class:Actinopterygii
Order:Salmoniformes
Family:Salmonidae
Genus:Oncorhynchus
Rainbow trout have a blue-green or olive green body with dark spots and a lateral line with a pink tint. Typically feeding on larva, aquatic insects, fish eggs, and terrestrial insects that end up in the water, they spend a lot of time searching for food. The rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri (Columbia River redband trout) are the subspecies found at VESR. Their overall population has declined due to many factors including habitat loss, over harvesting, invasive species and pollution, but there is lots of conservation efforts to build back their population.
