Calliope Hummingbird
Despite being the tiniest breeding bird in the United States, the Calliope Hummingbird is hardly overlooked with its bright magenta feathers on the throat of male birds. Both males and females have a flourescent green back and females have a white-peachy underside while males are gray underneath with an angular magenta pattern beneath. Typically breeding in high elevations, Calliope Hummingbirds can be found in mountain environments. They occasionally feed on small flying insects and seek out cup-shaped and tubular flowers for nectar. While being highly territorial on breeding grounds, they have been observed to chase away much larger birds including Red-tailed Hawks.
