The American Kestrel are smaller birds with a rusted brown color along their back and head with black bands and dots creating a unique pattern. You can spot female birds from males as they have burnt red wings while males have grey-blue coloration. American Kestrels can be found hunting in the day for insects and other invertebrates as well as some small rodents and birds in meadows, grasslands, desserts, or urban landscapes. Despite being the most popular falcon in North America, concern has increased for the species as 50% of the population decreased from 1966 to 2015. Kestrels have also been seen hiding surplus food in thick vegetation to save food for a later time.
