Killdeer
Scientific Name: Charadrius vociferus
Class:Aves
Order:Charadriiformes
Family:Charadriidae
Genus:Charadrius
The killdeer are a noisy plover whose shrill kill deer cry gave them their name. These shorebirds can be found foraging for insects in grasslands that stray far from the coast. When you spot one, you can notice their lanky legs and rounded head with a short beak and pointed tail. They are tan with white and black stripes along their neck. Killdeer tend to lay their eggs in abandoned nests but will continue to add to the found nest.
