Long-eared Owl
Scientific Name: Asio otus
Class:Aves
Order:Strigiformes
Family:Strigidae
Genus:Asio
If you see a Long-eared Owl you may be startled by the suprised look that the long feathers for the ears and large eyes construct. As a slender owl, they are lankey with slim faces and a pattern of gray, black, and brown on their wings and backs. The black and white banded “eyebrows” and orange coloration surronding thier eyes, allow for their yellow eyes to stand out. As a nocturnal species, they roost in dense trees for camoflauge and then hunt at night. Their large ears allow for great hearing to hunt for small mammals in complete darkness. They have a deep hoot that has been recorded to be heard one kilometer away from the owl.
