Red-naped Sapsucker
Scientific Name:Sphyrapicus nuchalis
Class:Aves
Order:Piciformes
Family:Picidae
Genus:Sphyrapicus
While originally thought of as a subspecies of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, the Red-naped Sapsucker warrants its own distinct species due to the red patch on the back of their heads. These sapsuckers will drill hundrends of tiny holes in trees to acquire sap but the trees still survive after this alteration. Clinging vertically to trees, you can spot these birds living in deciduous forests by their red cap and throat and white and black stripes along their eyes.
